Short Term Program - Indonesian Art and Culture, 28 July - 31 October 2008

Background
The Government of the Republic of Indonesia is offering a scholarship to study Indonesian art and culture at some of the best art and cultural centers located in various parts of Indonesia. This program is aimed at strengthening and promoting stronger cultural and educational cooperation as well as enhancing better understanding between Indonesia and participating countries on a people-to-people basis.
The Scholarship is offered to one or two participants from the following countries: member countries of the Southwest Pacific Dialogue (SwPD), Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), Pacific Islands Forum Countries (PIF), as well as China, India, Japan, South Africa, and South Korea.
Each Scholarship covers:
- Tuition fee (including extra-curricular activities)
- A round-trip economy class ticket
- Accommodation (board and lodging)
- Health Insurance
- Monthly allowance of Rp. 1,500,000 (approximately US$ 164; US$ 1 = Rp. 9,125,- as of 26 March 2008)
Terms and Conditions:
- Candidates should preferably be between the ages of 18 to 35 years old with at least a high school diploma;
- Candidates should possess high interest and talent in arts. Art students or those with an academic history in Indonesia culture are encouraged to apply;
- Candidates must complete the application form (attached) and submit it along with the followings;
- 3 (three) passport-sized photographs
- a photocopy of passport, which must be valid at least two years
- a photocopy of academic diploma
- a valid health certificate
- a letter declaring candidates will not work or be employee for financial benefits during her/his stay in Indonesia
- a letter of recommendation
- a letter declaring candidate’s willingness to be subject to Indonesian laws and regulations during his/her stay in Indonesia
- The Program will include training in Indonesian language. A minimum skill in Bahasa Indonesia or English will be an advantage for candidates.
Program:
I. Orientation program in Jakarta, 28 July-5 August 2008:
- Indonesian (bahasa Indonesia) Courses;
- Introduction to Indonesian history, culture, and foreign policy;
- Visits to Taman Mini Indonesian Indah, museums, and other Indonesian tourism landmarks;
- Out-bound Training.
II. Indonesian Art and Cultural Training, August-October 2008:
A. Sundanese Culture (in Bandung)
- Program comprises:
- Angklung and arumba (traditional Sundanese instruments);
- Wayang golek (traditional Sundanese puppettry);
- Selected Sundanese dances;
- Pencak silat (traditional martial arts);
- Extra-curricular activities, excursions, and field of study.
B. Javanese Culture (in Solo and Yogyakarta)
Program comprises:
- Selected Javanese dances;
- Karawitan (musical) art;
- Batik paintings;
- Traditional ceramics processing;
- Extra-curricular activities, excursions, and field of study.
C. Balinese Culture (in Bali)
- Program comprises:
- Selected Balinese dancing;
- Gamelan (Traditional Balinese instrument);
- Balinese carving and paintings.
- Program includes extra-curricular activities, excursions and field study.
