Jambi province is located in central Sumatra and its west region is located in an international shipping cross, Malacca Strait and South China Sea. Approximately 4 hours distance time is needed to achieve Batam from its main seaport location (Kuala Tungkal).
Therefore, the development of regional and international growth areas, especially the economic activity of Singapore-Batam-Johor (Malaysia) and the regional cooperation of Indonesia-Malaysia-Singapore Growth Triangle (IMS-GT) as well as the regional cooperation of Singapore-Johor-Riau (SIJORI), will increase the accessibility and give the impact to the economic growth of Jambi Province.
It was reflected by the increasing export volume during 1998-2000 with the amount of 807,759 ton, 1,020,433 ton and 1,165,799 ton, respectively; or increased in average 13.33% per annum. In 2000, the Agriculture sector still played substantial role in Jambi Economy, by contributed Rp. 2,841.4 billion (31.35%) to the GRDP, consisting of food crops, plantation and forestry.
The available area of agriculture, plantation and forestry was 2,179,440 ha. The main plantation commodities were rubber, cinnamon, palm oil and coconut. Meanwhile, the main forest commodities were logging, sawed wood, plywood, block board and pulp In addition, this province has also plenty potential mineral deposit such as limestone, coal, gold, bentonit, granite, marble, quartz sand, obsidian, kaolin, etc.

The Jambi Province is located on 0°45’ - 2°45 South Latitude and 101º10’-104º55’ East Longitude.
The Government administration comprises of 9 Regencies (Kabupaten) (Kerinci, Bungo, Tebo, Sarolangun, Merangin, Batanghari, Tanjung Jabung Barat, Tanjung Jabung Timur) and 1 City (Jambi).
The widest area among the regencies is Kabupaten Sarolangun (7.820 km2) and the smallest is Jambi City (205 km2).
The heaviest rainfalls occur between October-December with average temperature about 28°C-31,5°C.
GROSS REGIONAL DOMESTIC PRODUCTS
In 2000, GRDP of Jambi amounted Rp. 9,014 billion, increased 13.99% compared to the figure of 1999. The agriculture sector was the highest contribution of GRDP, in which, accounted for 31.52%, followed by trade, restaurant and hotel (16.86%), industry (15.62%), mining (11.22%) and services (10%). In 2000, the economic growth was 2.20%.
EXPORT-IMPORT
In 2000, Jambi’s export value was US$ 455,745,000 in which primarily consisted of agriculture and processing products. This value increased 2% compared to the amount of US$ 445,288,000 in 1999. While in 2000, the import value reached US$ 99,694,000 from US$ 41.768.000 in 1999.
MINIMUM WAGE RATES
In 2000, the minimum regional wage level in Jambi was approximately Rp. 245,000/month-Rp. 325,000/month, accordance with the business sectors.
The important sector is agriculture; while sectors give the highest contribution and potency are plantation, forestry and mining.
AGRICULTURE
In 2000, the area of non rice-plant was 82,368 ha, mainly utilized for cassava, corn, sweet potato, peanut, soybean, mung bean, fruits and vegetables. The unutilized potential area covers 204,155 ha. In the same year, the plantation area was 1,091,141 ha, dominated by rubber, cassiavera, coconut and palm oil.
FORESTRY
The total forest area in year 2000/2001 was 2,148,950 ha, consisting of production forest (1,278,700 ha), conservation (191,130 ha), tourism forest and wildlife reserve forest (679,120 ha) and conversion forest (726,900 ha). The wood-based products are log, plywood, particle board, block board, sawmill wood and pulp.
MINING
Jambi Province has potential resources in mining sector. From its deposit, petroleum/oil has been exploited. Meanwhile, other mineral deposit has not to be exploited such as coal, gold, bentonit, marble, limestone, iron ore, clay, granite, quartz sand, obsidian and kaolin.
