Central Java province has a strategic position. This province is accessible from other regions by various means of transportation; land transportation, sea transportation and air transportation. That is an important factor that companies or institutions consider in making regional, national as well as international market plan.
In this region, a fame pre-historic heritage, fossils of "Pithecanthropus Erectus Javanicus" were found. The ancient human being lived 750,000 B.C. were found in "Dome of Sangiran".
The magnificent temple of Borobudur as a heritage of glorious period of Buddhism is also located in this region. Besides Borobudur, Mendut temple and Gedong Songo temple become the evidence of historical heritages and cultural glory of Central Java as well.
Central Java province has many kinds of arts. Wayang kulit (leather puppet), wayang orang (people puppet) and kethoprak (traditional theater) are the special art of Central Java. These arts performed with traditional orchestra, accompanying by traditional singers called Waranggono or sinden. Central Java people has a strong characteristic of cooperation in addition of honestly and togetherness as primary characteristics. The spirit that helping others is a live obligation provides the basic for social harmonious and togetherness.
As a part of Java Island, Central Java has abundant and qualified agricultural resources. Rice is the most products of food crops in this province. Corn is another crop that can grow rapidly in this region. Central Java enjoys benefits of its strategic position. Besides bordering to other provinces, it is framed by Java Sea in north and Indonesia Ocean in south. The coast is stretching along 656,1 Km, provides a high opportunity to develop fisheries and coastal fishpond.
Central Java Province is located between 108°30' - 111°30' east longitude and 5°40' - 8°30' south latitude. The area is as much as 3.25 million hectares.
The governmental administration is divided into 29 residents and 6 cities. The biggest region is Cilacap regency with the area of 213,851 Ha, since Magelang city is the least with the area of 108,573 Ha. The highest rainfall is approximately 1,145 - 4,277 mm/year with the average temperature of 18°C - 28°C.
GROSS REGIONAL DOMESTIC PRODUCTS
In 2001, GRDP based on constant price in Central Java Province amounted as much as Rp 42,305,176.42 million. Processing industry sectors contributed the biggest portion of 30.30%, followed by trading, hotel and restaurant 23.86% and agriculture 20.33%.
ECONOMIC GROWTH
During the last 3 years (1999 - 2001), the average of economic growth based on constant price was 3.57%, since the average of income per capita in provincial level based on constant price was Rp. 1,132,931.26 in 2000 and Rp 1.152.253,92 in 2001.
EXPORT-IMPORT
In 2001, the export value of Central Java province reached US$ 1,972,541,795 or 3.5% of total export of Indonesia in the same period. Non-oil and gas commodities provided the most contribution (90.34%), while oil and gas commodities contributed the remaining portion (9.66%).
In the same period, import value was US$ 2,925,102,864 or 9.46% of total import of Indonesia. The most imported goods come through Tanjung Emas seaport.
MINIMUM WAGE RATES
In 2002, minimum regional wages was around Rp 360,000/ month.
FOOD CROPS
This province is a national food supporter, so that its productivity, especially on rice has to be encouraged.
In 2001, productivity of rice was 50.22 quintal/ha, mostly contributed by irrigated rice field (± 98%).
Klaten resident had the highest productivity with 55.25 Kw/Ha. Besides rice, productivity of corn, cassava, sweet potato, soybean and mung bean has fluctuated. While harvesting area and production decreased, productivity in this area has increased.
PLANTATION
From agriculture sectors, plantation products provide a valuable contribution to the economy. It consists of large plantation and plantation owned by people. In 2001, most area of plantation owned by people was planted with clover, kapok, sugar cane, coconut and tobacco, with sugar cane as the highest product.
ANIMAL HUSBANDRY
Mostly, animals cultivated in this province are big animals such as beef cattle, dairy cow, buffalo and horse. Another animals cultivated are goat, sheep and pig as well as several of poultry such as chicken, duck, quail and rabbit.
FISHERIES
In addition with sea fishery, fresh water fishery is cultivated in this province, consists of cultivation (embankment, irrigated field, pond and floating net fisheries) and public waters (basin, river, lake and swamp).
FORESTRY
Based on report of PT. Perhutani (Persero) Unit I, forest area in Central Java is as much as 648 thousand Ha or 19.9% of total area of this province. That area is divided based on its function into production forest (88.52%), protected forest (11.35%), and wildlife reserve/tourism forest (0.13%). The forest product for instance is oak wood.
