Province of South Kalimantan has good territorial water both river and swamp. Rivers or swamps in this province have great fishery potency with various sea and swamp fish. Beside, South Kalimantan has also wide field area and it is potential for big husbandry and other husbandries development.
Devise income for Province of South Kalimantan reached million hundred dollar yearly, came from various processing products of wood material, especially, plywood, instead of traditional diamond mining, agricultural product, and plantation mainly rubber and rattan that are exported to Singapore. Oil from South Kalimantan is from Tanjung to East Kalimantan.
Then, it processed and exported to overseas or it used for domestic consumption. Although the area of forest sector is small but forest product industry has developed by various products and processed material. Industrial Plantation Forest (HTI) has also developed rapidly, especially in Regency of Banjar, Regency of Kotabaru, and Regency of Tanah Laut.
Meanwhile, mining sector and plantation are also important because of this Province has a great potency in mining development, plantation, and horticulture. Of course the great attention to these three sectors does not mean that other sectors are forgotten. Nowadays, infrastructure sector gets great attention to rebuilt and developed.
The goal is merely to attract more investors to invest in this region. Since entering 21st century, South Kalimantan with Banjarmasin, the capital city, and its trading tradition and economy has been the most developed in all Kalimantan. This province enters "one-step ahead" phase, either in manufacturing industry sector or service industry without exception of tourism in small, medium and big scales.
The area of Province of Kalimantan is 37,530.52 km². It spreads between 1140 19' 13" and 1160 33'28" East Latitude and 1210 49" - 410 14" South Longitudinal.
Administratively the government is divided into 13 Regencies and 2 Cities, namely Regency of Tanah Laut, Regency of Kotabaru, Regency of Banjar, Regency of Tapin, Regency of Hulu Sungai Selatan, Regency of Hulu Sungai Tengah, Regency of Hulu Sungai North, Regency of Tabalong, Regency of Tanah Bumbu, and Regency of Balangan as well as 2 Cities, namely Municipality of Banjarmasin and Municipality of Banjarbaru.
The widest regency is Regency of Kotabaru (14,489.69 km²) and the least is Municipality of Banjarbaru (367.12 km²). The most rainfall occurs between 2000 and 3000 mm yearly and the temperature is 25.6° C - 26.9°C.
GROSS REGIONAL DOMESTIC PRODUCTS
In 2001, GRDP of South Kalimantan reached Rp. 6.7 trillion. Agriculture sector contributed 22%; followed by mining sector 18% and industry 17%.
EXPORT-IMPORT
Export value in 2002 were US $ 1,081,277,418.58, while import value were US$. 73,636,183.74.
MINIMUM WAGE RATES
Minimum wage rate in 2001 in sectors of agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry and plantation was Rp. 377,500 monthly. The highest minimum wage rate was in mining and digging sector Rp. 475,000 monthly.
AGRICULTURE
The area of food crop plantation (non paddy) in South Kalimantan is 6,865 ha, consisting of oranges, rambutans, bananas, and durians. The products in 2001 were 54,222 tons.
PLANTATION
Plantation production in 2001 reached 366,665.5 tons as follows: people's plantation 223,770.5 tons, state plantation 15,478 tons, and huge private plantation 127,417 tons.
People's plantation has developed by various types of plantation, namely people nucleus company pattern. This pattern directs and develops the activities of farmers, from giving information, financing, and cultivation until marketing. Self supporting pattern means development pattern, namely facility subsidized and foreign development. Nusantara plantation has been set up in South Kalimantan, with rubber and sugar cane commodities, and the area is 127,417 ha.
ANIMAL HUSBANDRY
Investment potency in animal husbandries sector are big animal husbandries such as cow, buffalo, horse, sheep, pig, goat, purebred chicken, broiler, laying chicken, and duck.
INDUSTRY
The industrial growth is an acceleration of sectors of plantation, animal husbandry, forestry, and mining as well as tourism, Other sectors that have developed are plastic industry, glove and CPO from plantation, cold storage and fish canning from fishery product, cement industry and marble from mining, plywood industry, block board and venal from forest and services industry from tourism.
To support industry development and to create a conducive climate, the government of South Kalimantan Province has directed three industry areas, namely Alalak industrial region/River Barito, Liang Anggang industrial area, and Industrial Estate of Batulicin.
