^ Brief Information

Central Kalimantan is one of the provinces with a large territory of 153,800 km2, in which, most of them are forest area. The forest of Central Kalimantan are rich in economically valuable commodities such as various types of wood and several other products.

In addition to forestry, other fields with great potential for development are plantations, agriculture, food crops, animal husbandry and fishery.

These can be seen to their contribution in supporting the regional economic growth with its GRDP in 2001 accounted Rp. 5,524.68 billions or 46.60%. Some of the mine resources have big potential sources to be exploited in this area, among others are diamond, coal, quartz sand, jewel, mangaan, bentonite, phosphate, oil and gas, sulphur, iron, asbes and a number of other mining commodities.

^ Geography

This province is located between 00°45' North Latitude and 30°31' South Latitude and between 11°10-11°50 East Longitude with the total area of 153,800 km2 or 15,380,000 hectares.

Administratively, the government of the province is divided into 8 regencies, namely Lamandau Regency, Sukamara Regency, Katingan Regency, Serayan Regency, Gunung Mas Regency, Pulang Pisau Regency, Barito Timur Regency and Murung Raya Regency.

The annual average rainfall is 2,732 mm or average rain of 120 days. The average temperature of the area is 290C. The lowest temperature being 14°C and the highest 33°C.

^ Economy

GROSS REGIONAL DOMESTIC PRODUCTS

In 2001 the Central Kalimantan Province’s gross domestic product totalled Rp. 11,854 billion, meaning that it increased 9% compared to that of in year 2000 with the largest contribution came from sectors of agricultural (46.60%), followed by trade and restaurant (18.65%), services (10.45%), transportation and telecommunication (8.19%) and manufacturing (7,10%).

EXPORT-IMPORT

In 2000, the value of provincial exports amounted at US$ 141.5 million which was derived largely from forest commodities such as wood, rubber and other plantation products. Import value on the other hand reached US$ 10.19 million with the commodities of capital goods, basic metal, chemicals and other raw/supporting materials.

MINIMUM WAGE RATES

Monthly regional minimum wages is Rp. 362,000. The highest rate is in mining sector amounted at Rp. 430,780/monthly.

^ Natural Resources

AGRICULTURE

In 2001 the agricultural area covered 161,900 hectares comprising of 146,543 ha of food crops, 5,073 ha of corn, 3, 654 ha of soybean and 6,630 ha of cassava.

PLANTATION

At present, the plantation area is around 550,293 ha with the main commodity products in 2001, namely : 843,459 tons TBS/year of palm and 200,289 tons of rubber, 63,296 tons of coconut and 6,462 tons of pepper.

FISHERIES

Ocean fishing resources areas reached 750 km2 with the 2001 production of fish amounted at 55,911 tons, while fresh water products amounted at 35,654 tons cultivated by the area of 2.29 million hectares.

FORESTRY

The cultivation forest area reached 8,674,824 ha comprising of 4,461,322 ha of production forest, 4,056,911 ha of limited production forest and 156,591 ha of industrial forest. The outstanding forest products are logs, sawn wood, plywood, rattan and shingles.

MINING

Among the most important mining commodities of this province are gold, coal and quartz sand.
