The Riau Islands are a province and a group of islands in Indonesia, located south of Singapore, off the eastern coast of Riau province on Sumatra island. The archipelagoes of Anambas and Natuna, located between Malaysia and Borneo, are also a part of the province. The Riau Islands were split off from mainland Riau as a separate province in July 2004 with Tanjung Pinang as its capital.
By population, the most important Riau islands are Bintan, Batam and Karimun. Sizewise, however, the sparsely populated Natuna Islands are larger.
