^ Brief Information

The development in Province of Maluku after conflict is focused on re-building the infrastructure/ facility and the potential sectors to be developed, such as agriculture sector especially sea fishing and forestry. These sectors are expected to have an important role for the economy of Maluku's Province.

As the region with abundance of sea resources, the potency in marine investment is promising. Fish product potency that can be produced in Maluku is 1,627.500 Tons yearly Forestry sector is also interesting. Maluku has a wide forest with several of available wood to be processed by investors. Some big investors have used this forestry potency. Although the attention has given more to these two sectors, but it does not mean that other sectors are forgotten.

Even, especially for infrastructure sector, recently, the great attention has to re-built and developed. The goal is to attract more investors to invest in this region.

^ Geography

The area of Province of Maluku is 711,479.69 km². It spreads between 124°-136° East Longitudinal and 3°-8° South Latitude.

Administratively the government is divided into 4 Regencies and 1 City, namely Regency of Central Maluku, Buru Island, Southeast Maluku, West Southeast Maluku, and Municipality of Ambon.

The broadest regency is Regency of Central Maluku (195.94 km²) and the least is Municipality of Ambon (377 km²). The lowest rainfall occurs in January and November: 90 mm yearly, and the highest occurs in August and October: 400 mm yearly with the temperature 26.2ºC.

^ Economy

GROSS REGIONAL DOMESTIC PRODUCTS

In 2000, GRDP Maluku was Rp. 1.29 billion. Agriculture sector contributed 34%, followed by trade/hotel/restaurant sector 21.45%, services 20% and transportation / communication 0.98 %.

EXPORT-IMPORT

Export value in 2000 was US$ 88,049.250, meanwhile import value was US$. 83,507.140.

MINIMUM WAGE RATES

Minimum wage rate in 2002 for all sectors was Rp. 285,000 monthly.

^ Natural Resources

AGRICULTURE

Area of food crop (non paddy) in Maluku is 40,857 ha, consisted of 7,390 tons corn in 1997 - 2001.

PLANTATION

Area of plantation in 2000 was coconut 103,246 ha, cacao/chocolate 12,077 ha, clove 30,158 ha, cashew nut 9,463 ha, coffee 3,859 ha and nutmeg 8,674 ha. Area of chocolate was 12,077 ha. The product was dry chocolate. In 2001, 1,385.5 tons has been produced, while clove plantation with the area of 24,432 ha can produce 5,003 tons.

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY

Animal husbandry investment potency is cow, chicken, and broiler/laying pullet husbandries. These businesses are carried on by farmers in City of Ambon, Central Maluku, Southeast Maluku, West Southeast Maluku, and Buru Island.

FISHERIES

The potency of territorial water is suitable for fishing and cultivation or commodity business development with the area of 495,300 ha as follows:

FORESTRY

Forestry sector investment potency consists of conversion forest 13,496 km², permanent production forest 5,770 km², limited production forest 13,496 km², reserved forest 12,449 km², and other used forest 15,468 km².

MINING

Maluku region is known to have the potency of petroleum and natural gas with hypothetic resources 1,074 million barrels (532 million barrels have been used), nickel, gold, and limestone.
