^ Brief Information

West Nusa Tenggara is a province in south-central Indonesia. It covers the western portion of the Lesser Sunda Islands, except for Bali.

The two largest islands in the province are Lombok in the west and the larger Sumbawa island in the east. Mataram, on Lombok, is the capital and largest city of the province. The province is administratively divided into six regencies (kapbupaten) and one municipality (kotamadya), Mataram.

Lombok is mainly inhabited by the Sasak ethnic group, with a minority Balinese population, and Sumbawa is inhabited by Sumbawa and Bima ethnic groups. Each of these groups has a local language associated with it as well. The population of the province is 3.821.134; 71 percent of the population lives in Lombok (2000 census).

^ Geography

The province of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) lies between 8º5’–9º7’ South latitudes and between East longitude 115º49’. This province consisting of two big islands, Sumbawa and Lombok, and several smaller islands such as Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, Gili Meno, Dili Gede, Gili Selat, Moyo island, Panjang island and Banta island. The province of NTB comprises a land area of about 20,153.15 square kilometres, including 15,414.45 kms of Sumbawa and 4,738.70 kms of Lombok.

The governmental administration is divided into 6 (six) regencies and 1 city, namely the regencies of Bima, Dompu, Sumbawa, West Lombok, Central Lombok, East Timur and Mataram City. The annual rainfall is between 1,000 mm/year – 2,000 mm/year with the rainfall day of 86 days per year. The temperature ranges between 30ºC – 32ºC and the minimum temperature ranges between 21°C – 25°C.

^ Economy

GROSS REGIONAL DOMESTIC PRODUCTS

In 2000, the GRDP of the West Nusa Tenggara was Rp. 4,510.5 billion. Mining sector contributed the biggest role to the GRDP with segment of 27.00%; followed by agriculture 26.85%; services 12.54%, industry and trade, restaurant and hotel 12.17%; communication 9.36% and construction 6.02%. Compared to that in 1989, the contribution of mining sector has increased to 27.00% from 12.7%.

EXPORT-IMPORT

In 2000, the export value was amounted of US$ 434.9 million. The largest export value was contributed by the commodities of copper concentrates, pumice, pearl, cashew bunch, earthenware vessels, carraginan, cashew nut, decorating fish and woodcraft.

MINIMUM WAGE RATES

In 2000, the regional minimum wage ranged between 240,000/month – Rp 275,000/month.

^ Natural Resources

AGRICULTURE

In 2000, the food crops production of the West Nusa Tenggara province was 1,729,166 ton, consisting of rice plant, corn, soybean, chili and red onion. In 2000, the available area of plantation was 151,549.2 Ha, especially plants of cashew nut, Virginia tobacco, cocoa, castor oil and coconut.

FISHERIES

Fisheries production reached 120,872.6 ton, consisted of marine fisheries and fresh water fisheries.

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY

Live stock/husbandry production was approximately 60,594, consisting cows, buffaloes, horses, goats and sheeps.

FORESTRY

In 1999, the total area of forestry was 1,279,701 Ha, consisting of 475,491 ha protected forest, 642,649 ha production forest, 53,800 ha wildlife reserve forest, 32,912 ha conservation forest, 3,530 ha tourism forest, 53,031 ha Hunting Park Forest and 18,288 ha brackish forest.

MINING

The area of the West Nusa Tenggara Province is rich with mineral deposits such as gold, silver, marble, copper, trass, pumice, quartz stone, silica and calcite.

^ Investment Opportunities

AGRICULTURE

The cashew nut, cocoa and castor oil plantations and modern animal husbandry with Ranch system for the commodities of local cow, breeding cow, horse, buffalo and deer are available in the area of 239.088 Ha.

FISHERY

There are fisheries cultivation of abalone, sea weed and prawn/shrimp and catching fisheries of cakalang, tuna and sea fish as well as fresh water/brackish fisheries.

FORESTRY

There are plant forest such as wood, eaglewood, ketak and rattan.

MINING

Many mining resources that can be exploited are marble, pumice, quartz, silica, calcite and many other minerals.

INDUSTRY

There are processing industries of agriculture products, forestry and mining. The supporting industries of agriculture, forestry, tourism are also available.

TOURISM

There are a number of recreation and entertainment centers and tourism supporting services such as hotel / accommodation, tourism transportation and restaurant.
