^ Brief Information

The East Nusa Tenggara province is located in the eastern portion Lesser Sunda Islands, including West Timor. The provincial capital is Kupang, located on West Timor.

The province consists of about 550 islands, but is dominated by the three main islands of Flores, Sumba, and West Timor, the western half of the island of Timor. The eastern part of Timor is the independent country of East Timor. Other islands include Adonara, Alor, Ende, Komodo, Lembata, Menipo, Rincah, Rote Island (the southernmost island in Indonesia), Savu, Semau, and Solor. The province is divided administratively into fourteen regencies (kabupaten) and one municipality (kotamadya), Kupang.

Along with the Indonesia government Policy to encourage the development rate of Eastern Region of Indonesia, the regional government continually strives to develop, improve and increase infrastructures to provide a better climate for investment. The regional government of East Nusa Tenggara has also made every effort to give assistance to the investors who have established their investment in this region.

^ Geography

The area of East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT) spreads out between 8 -12 South Latitude and 118 -125 East Longitude. It comprises approximately 566 islands, consists of large and small islands. As much as 42 islands are inhabited, such as Timor Island (14,394.90 km2), Flores (14,231 km2), Sumba (11,040 km2), Alor (2,073.40 km2), Lomblen (1,266 km2), Rote (1,214.30 km2), Pantar (711.80 km2), Andonara (518.80 km2), Sabu (421.70 km2), Komodo (332.40 km2), Semau (261 km2), Salor (226.20 km2), Rinca (212.50 km2) and other small islands (445.90 km2). Besides, 524 islands are uninhabited and 320 islands are not recognized yet.

This province has total are of 47,349.9 km2, including + 200,000 km2 waters area. The largest region is Kupang regency with 7,178.26 km2areas, while the smallest region is Kupang city with the area of 160.34 km2.

This region has semi-arid climate, with the relatively low rainfall and the low vegetation of which is dominated by savannah and steppe. In the rain season, Sikka regency has the lowest rainfall, while Ngada regency has the highest rainfall.

The average rainfall of this region is between 36 - 4,127 mm/year with the average humidity in Kupang city reached 76% RH during the period of January -December 2001. The temperature is around 20,3°C-31,7°C. The average wind speed is 6 knot per hour and atmospheric pressure is around 926.3 millimeter bar.

^ Economy

GROSS REGIONAL DOMESTIC PRODUCTS

In 2001, the Gross Regional Domestic Product was amounted to Rp 3,107.9 billion. Agriculture sectors gave the most contribution (36.67%), followed by service sectors (23.64%), trading, hotel and restaurant (14.10%), transportation and communication (10.68%), building/construction (6.20%), financing, leasing and services (4.15%) and other sources (4.56 %).

ECONOMIC GROWTH

In 2001, the everage economic growth was 5.27 %, exceeding the national economic growth of 3.32%.

INCOME PER CAPITA

In 2001, provincial income per capita was recorded as much as Rp 732,100.00 per year.

EXPORT-IMPORT

In 2002, the export value of the products of fisheries and marine, farming (agriculture), plantation, animal husbandry, plastic goods, wood and wood particles and other goods was amounted to Rp 1,351,7 billion. Meanwhile, the import value of necessary goods such as capital goods, raw materials and consumption goods reached Rp 2,386,2 billion. Compared to that of previous 2 years, both the export and import value is still declining.

MINIMUM WAGE RATES

In 2002 the regional minimum regional wages was around Rp 184,000 per month - Rp 330,000 per month.

^ Natural Resources

AGRICULTURE/FARMING

In 2002, food crop production was recorded as 2,045.397 ton, comprised rice, corn, sweet potatoes, cassava, and mung bean.

PLANTATION

In addition, plantation production covered coconut, coffee, cashew nuts, candlenut, bananas, cocoa, betel vine, clove and kapok with the total production of 111,271 ton.

FISHERIES

Meanwhile, the production of sea fisheries and fresh water fisheries reached 103,512 ton.

FORESTRY

Based on the data of BPS of East Nusa Tenggara province in 2001, the main product of forestry in 1999 covered 10,173 m3 log teak, 154,563 m3 log, 1,180,303 m3 processed wood, 642,741 m3 proceed teak wood and 684,717 yellow sandalwood trees. Other forest commodities were also recorded such as rattan, kemendangan, tamarind and honey. Recently, the forest products of this province were not recorded during the previous three years.
