Having located in the eastern part of Indonesia, and had half of New Guinea island area, Papua province spreads over the island as far as 1,200 km and 736 km respectively from western to eastern part and from northern to southern of the island. The province that has about 3.5 times of Java island area is directly bordered with Papua New Guinea (PNG).
Several high mountains and hills, 650 km form the landscape of the province across the middle of the island. There are 3 famous mountain peaks that are wholly year covered by snow, Jayawijaya (5,130 m), Trikora (5,160 m) and Yamin (5,100 m).
There are several big rivers and lakes that are being important to the local communities. The remote areas, which were very abundant of natural resources, provide many potential business opportunities like agriculture, fishery, gas, mines and mining resources. They have not been optimally exploited.
Other business sectors are forestry products such as: log, timber, block board, moulding, plywood, chips etc. Along with the growing number of its population, the other potential economic sectors of Papua are livestock and cattle products, fishery products, and tourism as well.
Considering the tourism objects potential, the province has not been substantially revealed by the outsiders and by the domestic tourists. Among others are the Lorentz and Wasur national parks, undersea excursion beneath the Padaido and snow mountain hiking on Jayawijaya. There can also be noted to acknowledge the distinct and uniqueness of flora and fauna in Papua of which, could not be found in other provinces/regions.
There are several Australia-like animals such as kangaroo, squirrel, and beaver, in addition to the Papua original species cendrawasih, mambruk and Kasuari. The outstanding flora is Raffles Arnold, a giant orchid species. Papua is assumed to be one of the most complete region that is inherited by abundant and various natural and biology resources. This may lead the investors to explore its business potential and prospect.
Papua is situated on 130° - 141° East Longitude and 2°25° North Latitude - 9° South Latitude.
Government administration is set into 12 regencies/municipals and 2 administrative cities, Merauke, Jayawijaya, Jayapura, Paniai, Puncak Jaya, Nabire, Fak-Fak, Mimika, Sorong, Manokwari, Yapen Waropen, Biak Numfor, City Jayapura and City Sorong.
Merauke is the largest regency with 119,749 sq km (28.38%) and the smallest regency is Kota Jayapura (940 sq Km).
The average temperature ranges between 19.9°C - 27.9°C, while in the night, its temperature ranges 21.5° - 23.2°. The average rainfall varies between 2,653 mm - 2,668 mm.
GROSS REGIONAL DOMESTIC PRODUCTS
Comparing the 2001 and 2000 Papua's GRDP in economic sector by constant price figures reached Rp. 8.2 trillion, against Rp. 8.3 trillion. It was slightly decreasing. The contribution of mining, agriculture and service sector were quite significant, to figure out, the percentage were 57.50%, 18.51% and 6.09% respectively.

In 2001, the economic growth was -1,64%.
INCOME PER CAPITA
In 2001, regional income per capita by constant price was Rp.3.10 million.
EXPORT-IMPORT
In 2001 Papua 's export value experienced a decreasing trend of 74.69% comparing year 2001 and 2000, to US$ 343.664.557 from US$ 357.625.276. If it was assessed by exporting seaport, then 84.16% of the total export was facilitated by Amampare seaport (Mimika) that is the largest exporting seaport that exports copper products.
The second largest seaport is Sorong seaport accounted for 7.27%. In view of product commodities, semi-finished mining products export value was US$ 1,127.88 million (83.94%), US$ 79.38 million (5,91%) was accounted by margarine, US$ 63.73 million (4.74%) by food product and life-animal, US$ 2.57 million (0,19%) by gasoline. Meanwhile Papua's import value in 2001 was recorded as much as US$ 540,427,055. Of the total import, 95.96 % was done via Amampare seaport.
MINIMUM WAGE RATES
In 2001, the minimum regional wage rate (UMR) of the province ranges between Rp. 460,000-Rp. 600,000, while the minimum living cost for workers (KHM) was Rp. 450,000 monthly.
AGRICULTURE
In 2001, the food crops land area was 38,529 ha, producing paddy 142,930 ton. The other main products are cassava, sweet potato, peanut, soybean, and green beans. Meanwhile, the main fruit products are among others: banana, pineapple, avocado, mango, rambutan, duku, water jamboo, guava, oranges, skin-fruit, Pine apples, etc.
PLANTATION
Plantation trees have shown increasing productivity in term of land area and production. The total plantation area is 98,116 ha with main products are among others palm oil, coconut, cacao, coffee, cashew nut, nutmeg, crumb rubber and ginger.
FISHERIES
The total production of fishery sector in 2001 was 212,212 ton, increasing 1.99% from 2000. Of this total, 97.53% was the marine fishery product. The types of products are among others lobsters, shrimp, tuna/skipjack, pelagic and demurral.
LIVESTOCK
Other than cow and horse cattle, population of livestock's commodities was increasing during 2001. Compared with 2000, the buffalo cattle increased 11.15%, goat, sheep, and pig also increased 7.29%, 14.4% and 3.48% correspondingly, while cow and horses cattle decreased 2.89% and 8.34% respectively.
FORESTRY
In 2001, the forest area in the Papua reached 42,028,783 hectare. Of this area, 10,765,465 hectare is used for protection forests, 7,459,588 hectare for PPA forests, 14,000,484 hectare is used for limited and sustainable forest production, and 8,620,018 hectare is used for conversion forest and 1,183,228 hectare for others.
MINING
Papua has been inherited by abundant mineral, natural gas and mining sources. One of the remarkable mineral resources, copper, have huge deposits in the world. It is estimated to have 2 billion tons. Other substantial and prospective mineral and mining resource deposits are gold, silver, platinum, iron, coal, nickel, talk, marble, kaolin and sandstone.
