^ Brief Information

Agriculture sector including fishery, plantation and forestry is the main "wheel" for economy growth in this province. The main attraction of this province is the availability of wide and fertile soil.

Many agriculture commodities can grow well while they are not appropriate with the soil in other provinces. Among the commodities are cocoa, cashew nuts, coconut, coffee, clove, pepper and kapok. In main food crops except paddy, the more developed commodities are corn, sweet potato, and soybean.

Until now, Indonesia has not self-supporting on soybean yet. Mining is a promising sector because this province is wellknown for asphalt, sand, iron, nickel, coal, oil, and marble. Some mining products have been produced, but others still in deposit. Realizing these natural resources, since few years the government of Southeast Sulawesi Province has continuously initiate to use natural resources in each regency/city.

The result is demanding. It can be seen from the increased of income per capita. The regional economy growth with contribution from various sectors in GRDP year 2001 amounted Rp. 1,766,340.09 million. The biggest contribution comes from agriculture (31.22%), services (16.84%), and trade /hotel/ restaurant (14.44%).

^ Geography

This province is located in south of the equator, spread over the North to the South between 30 - 60 South Longitudinal and 120045' - 124060' East Longitude. The area is 148,140 km2, including 38,140 km2 of land and 110,000 km2 of sea water. Administratively, the government of Southeast Sulawesi Province consists of 6 regencies/cities, namely Regency of Kendari, Regency of Buton, Regency of Kolaka, Regency of Muna, City of Bau-Bau and City of Kendari. The widest Regency is Kendari with the area of 16,184 km2 while the smallest is City of Bau-Bau with the area of 221 km2.

The rainfall occurs between 1,499-2,258 mm with the average temperature is between 200C-340C.

^ Economy

GROSS REGIONAL DOMESTIC PRODUCTS

In 2002, GRDP of Province of Southeast Sulawesi amounted Rp. 1,766,340.09 billion, increased 5.62% compared with the figure of 2000. The highest contribution accounted for agriculture sector (31.22%), services (16.84%) and trade/hotel (14.44%).

INCOME PER CAPITA

Income per capita in Province of Southeast Sulawesi in 2001 was Rp. 972, 896, - Economy growth: 5.6%.

EXPORT-IMPORT

In 2001, export value was US$ 94,728.800; - most of them were nickel, fish, shrimp, and plantation product. Meanwhile import value reached US$ 1,651.000 from nickel, shrimp, and plantation commodities.

MINIMUM WAGE RATES

Regional minimum wage rate was Rp. 500,000 monthly. The highest wage rate in mining sector amounted Rp. 1,000.000 monthly.

^ Natural Resources

AGRICULTURE

In 2001, the area of main food products was 129,299 ha, mainly utilized for 263,477 tons of paddy, 60,385 tons of corn and 152,817 tons of sweet potatoes. Fruit productions were 135,192 kuintal manggoes, 162,871 kuintal oranges, 360,739 kuintal bananas and 63,477 kuintal jackfruits.


PLANTATION

The total of plantation area in 2001 reached 320,497 ha with the main productions was cocoa, coconut, cashew nuts, and coffee.

FISHERIES

The area of sea fishery in Southeast Sulawesi is 110,000 km2 with the potency of 500,000 tons everlasting fish yearly. The level of new used reached 168,339 tons yearly (33.66%). The area of land fishery is 44,019 ha.

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY

The areas of animal husbandry are available in all regencies for the development of big and small animal husbandries. In 2001, the population were 235,000 cows, 9,721 buffaloes, 89,514 goats.

FORESTRY

Forest area reached 2,600.137 ha including 419,244 ha of limited production forest, 633,431 ha of general production forest, 274,069 ha of tourism forest, 212,123 ha of conversion production forest, 1,061.270 ha of wildlife reserve forest.

MINING

There is much important mining potency in this province such as asphalt, coal, iron, nickel, quartz sand, dolomite, magnesite and marble.
