The province is situated on 1.6 million ha swamp areas on the east, lowland on the west. In addition, Bukit Barisan highlands that have 900-1,200 m above the sea mark the landscape of the province.
The surrounding areas of Bukit Barisan, the down hills, there have been rubber, palm oil, coffee, tea and vegetables plantations. There are several cities/municipals that have quite far distance to Palembang, the capital of the Province, such as the farthest is from Palembang to Lubuk Linggau, 388 Km distance; then, from Palembang to Baturaja, 214 Km; from Palembang to Lahat, 226 Km; Muara Enim 183 Km, Sekayu 124 Km and the closest city to Palembang: Kayu Agung, 66 Km distance.
The economic development is based on the potential natural resources, of which the local government gives priority on 6 (six) promising business sectors:
- agriculture (paddy, horticulture, vegetables, fruits etc);
- sea and land fishery;
- livestock such as cow, buffalo, horse, goat, sheep, pig, chicken;
- large size or people's plantation such as rubber, coconut, coffee, pepper, cocoa, vanilla, palm oil, sugarcane, nutmeg, cotton, cashew nut, and other spices etc;
- Mining: oil, gas, coal, gold and silver;
- Tourism: musi river tourism and Sriwijaya Kingdom sites & Museum. The priority of regional government is supported by Tanjung Api-Api seaport as the exporting port. The seaport in Palembang, which is called as Boom Baru, has very limited service.
AREA
The province is located on west Indonesia, between 1°- 4° south latitude and 102° - 106° east longitude with the total area of 97,159.32 sq km. The largest regency is regency Ogan Komering Ilir, with 21,387 sq km area, while the smallest regency is Kota Palembang with 400.61 sq km area
GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATION
In 2002, the government administration is set into 11 (eleven) regencies/administrative cities (Kabupaten/kota). The regencies are as follows: Ogan Komering ulu, Ogan Komering Ilir, Muara Enim, Lahat, Musi Rawas, Musi Banyuasin, while, cities/kota are as follows: Palembang, Prabumulih, Pagaralam and Lubuk Linggau. The number of regencies/cities are set as a result of the enlargement of government administration.
AVERAGE RAINFALL
The average rainfall ranges between 31.5 mm - 378.7 mm with its average temperature varies between 25.9°C - 28.2°C.
GROSS REGIONAL DOMESTIC PRODUCTS
In 2002, the GDRP of the South Sumatera accumulated as much as Rp 55,545.8 billion. The biggest contribution sector is mining (32.68%), manufacturing (18.80%), agriculture (15.84%), trading, industry, hotel and restaurant (15.59%), building/ construction (4.13%) and other (miscellaneous) sectors (12.96%).
ECONOMIC GROWTH
In 2002, the economic growth including oil and gas reached 4.38%. The figure was increased, comparing with the previous figure in 2001, as much as 4.11%.

In 2002, the regional income per capita based on constant price was Rp 1, 924.330,-
EXPORT-IMPORT
In 2002, the export value to 82 countries was recorded as much as US$ 502,649,329.00 comprises of rubber goods, coffee, tea, coal, fertilizer, ammoniac, sugarcane, coil wires, and wood products. Meanwhile the import value to 43 countries was US$ 135,149,477.00, consisting of household and consumer goods, healthcare, cosmetic, industry half finished goods, engineering equipments & apparatus.
MINIMUM WAGE RATES
In 2002, the monthly minimum wage rage (UMR) based on 7 hours working day or 40 hours per week was Rp 403,500.00.
The potential natural resources belong to the South Sumatera province is quite promising, like agriculture sectors, plantation, mining, tourism and marine business, demanding the needs of ultimate exploration.
AGRICULTURE
