48 ORANGUTANS RETURN HOME SOON TO INDONESIA

As a follow up to its commitment to return smuggled orangutans to Indonesia, the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand will repatriate 48 orangutans to Indonesia on 22 November 2006.

To mark the returning process, there will be a handing-over ceremony of the apes from the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand represented by the Ambassador of Thailand to Indonesia, H.E. Mrs. Atchara Seriputra, to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia represented by the Indonesian first lady, H.E. Madame Ani Yudhoyono. The ceremony will take place on 22 November 2006 at the Air Force base, Halim Perdana Kusuma, Jakarta.

After the ceremony, those orangutans are flown directly to Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan where they are originally from.

Before they are released to their habitat, the 48 orangutans will be quarantined for some time in the Rehabilitation Center in Palangkaraya to check their health condition.
